The 2009 AURA Hybrid is a 4-door, 5-passenger family sedan, available in one trim only, the Sedan. Upon introduction, the AURA Hybrid is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter, I4, 164-horsepower, hybrid engine that achieves 26-mpg in the city and 34-mpg on the highway. The all-new 2010 Toyota Prius offers no surprises, just significant improvement. It's sleeker and better looking, and more powerful while delivering an EPA-rated 51/48 mpg City/Highway, up by 3 miles per gallon.

The hybrid mechanicals are lighter by 65 pounds, while being more efficient and presumably stronger. The 1.8-liter gas engine is also new, producing more horsepower while being more efficient. Top speed has flown to 112 miles per hour from 103 mph, slam-dunk evidence that the Prius is a lot slicker package at half that speed.

Acceleration performance is adequate, 0 to 60 mph in 9.8 seconds, while the CVT, or continuously variable transmission, is smooth.

There are three driving modes: EV, ECO and Power. EV is all electric, for very short distances at speeds under 25 mph; ECO provides the best fuel mileage, without noticeably compromising performance; and Power, the default mode, is needed for brisk acceleration.

Handling is nimble enough at slow speeds, and the brakes are sensitive while being stacked with electronic capabilities for safety. There are seven airbags including one for the driver's knees. The ride can be harsh over the wrong bumps, and interior noise is surprisingly high despite increased sound insulation. Many owners might not notice, but others will, with so many Prius buyers in search of tranquility.

Standard magic includes Touch Tracer Display, projecting info before your eyes, so you can keep them on the road. Input comes from the pilot at the controls on the steering wheel, including not just audio and cruise control, but also climate control and trip computer, with telephone and other controls available.

Options include such technological tricks as a moonroof and solar-powered ventilation system; remote pre-air conditioning to cool the car down to ambient temperature before you climb in on a hot day; a warning beep when you're unsteady in your lane; radar cruise control; Intelligent Parking Assist that will parallel park the Prius with no steering or throttle input from the driver; and pre-collision emergency braking to slightly reduce the impact when you don't see an accident coming but the car's radar does.

Honda appears finally to have learned how to play in the hybrid game. Simply putting a hybrid powertrain in a regular car doesn't cut it. If a carmaker wants to be taken seriously, it had better deliver a hybrid that looks like what the market has said it wants a hybrid to look like. And that, apparently, given the sales numbers, is a Toyota Prius. Hence, the all-new, Honda Insight is virtually a carbon copy of that market leader.

Beyond that obvious surrender to a take-no-big-chances market, however, the 2010 Honda Insight does manage to march to a slightly different drummer. It's smaller than the Prius, for instance, which isn't necessarily a plus, as interior room suffers. But it's lighter, which is a plus, as less weight contributes to it's being a somewhat livelier driver.

Beyond this, it generally stays the course, with the common array of standard features plus an optional navigation system and Bluetooth capability. It also can be ordered with gimmicky paddle shifters that imposes an artificial construct of seven electronically created ratios on the continuously variable automatic transmission.

When the new Honda Insight is measured against the outgoing-generation 2009 Toyota Prius, it definitely hums a different tune. Put simply, the Insight's EPA-rated City/Highway 40/43 miles per gallon trails significantly the 48/45 mpg rating for the Prius. Honda appears to believe its faithful will willingly trade a few miles per gallon for a modestly quicker car.

Perhaps the most significant change Honda brings to the hybrid market is price competition. With the Insight, shoppers now have two similar cars from which to choose. The 2010 Honda Insight's $19,800 Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price just slightly undercuts the $21,000 MSRP of the all-new 2010 Toyota Prius. The first-generation 2009 Prius retailed for $23,375.

The 2010 Insight comes in one configuration: a four-door, five-passenger sedan. One powertrain is available: a combination of a 1.3-liter, 88-horsepower, inline four-cylinder gasoline engine and a 10-kilowatt, 13-hp, brushless, DC motor. Power goes only to the front wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). In the top two of the three models offered, steering wheel-mounted shift paddles manage a computer-generated seven-speed, simulated-manual gearbox. The base model uses a standard CVT that's efficient and highly competent.

The most striking feature of the 2009 Sierra is the interior. The cabin offered on the top SLT trim is similar to that currently offered on GM's full-size sport-utility vehicles such as the GMC Yukon, and offers standard luxury features like power heated front leather seats, six-disc CD/MP3-capable audio system and heated windshield washers, while top crew cab SLT models add rain-sensing wipers and a rear-seat audio system. SLT models are further differentiated by a completely different instrument panel and door panels, a huge, 20.1-liter center console storage area, and upgraded five-liter glove box. Ultrasonic rear parking assist is available.

The work truck and SL trims are equipped for those who plan to use their pickup for utility, with a more basic interior treatment. These trims still feature larger control knobs, plus a lockable in-seat storage bin that's large enough for a laptop computer and has a built-in 12-volt power outlet. The SL adds most popular equipment like air conditioning, cruise control, and a CD/MP3 audio system, and a SLE convenience package brings more luxury in the way of dual-zone climate control, a remote starting system and steering-wheel audio controls.

Stadium-style rear seats, which are split 60/40 and have a fold-down center armrest, are standard on the crew cab and available on the extended cab. Rear legroom is sizeable on extended cab models and ingress and egress are easy thanks to rear access doors that open 170 degrees.

Each trim level is available in either 2WD or an on-demand 4WD system with locking rear differential. A 195-horsepower, 4.3L V6 is standard on WT regular cab and 2WD extended cab models, while a 295-horsepower, 4.8L V8 is standard on WT 4WD extended cab, SLE regular cab and extended cab models, and WT and SLE crew cab models. A 315-horsepower, 5.3L V8 with Active Fuel Management, a system that automatically shuts down half of the cylinders during light-load driving, is available on the crew cab.

The Sierra hybrid utilizes a 6.0L V8 engine linked to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to product a total of 332 hp. It is a full hybrid, meaning it is able to run on both gasoline or solely on electric power, depending on load demands. The engine uses active fuel management to shut off cylinders when they aren't needed. Towing capacity is rated at 6,400 lbs.

That 5.3L V8 is available as an option on all other models, while there's also a Flex-Fuel version that adds E85 compatibility. Thanks to Active Fuel Management, the 5.3L gasoline Sierra is rated at 16 city, 21 highway, the same as the base 4.3L V6 and one of the best figures in its class.

As part of the maximum trailering package, a 367-horsepower (and 375 lb-ft), 6.0L V8 is available on SLE and SLT extended and crew cab models. This engine has variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management to maximize power output and efficiency. The package also includes a heavy-duty rear axle, locking differential, heavy-duty cooling system and high-capacity transmission.

New this year is an optional 403-hp, 6.2L Vortec V8 -- the most powerful engine in its class. While a 4-speed automatic is standard, a new 6-speed is also available.

Each of the five suspension systems available on the Sierra are tailored for particular driving situations, and each has a completely different character. The Z83 delivers the best ride, while the Z85 upgrades for improved handling and towing capacity. The Z71 is the option for those who plan to take their Sierra off-road, and for those wanting optimized street performance there's the Z60, which includes 20-inch wheels. The Sierra rides on a fully boxed frame with coil-over-shock front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering unit. StabiliTrak continues to be available on the Sierra.

Cargo bed lengths are 5'-8" for the short bed, 6'-6" for the standard bed, and 8' for the long bed, and rated payload goes up to 2,160 pounds when properly equipped.

The hybrid version of our flagship luxury sedan is still in development and will debut in 2007. The LS 600h L will be the world’s first production vehicle to feature a full-hybrid V8 power train. It is projected to produce more than 430 horsepower.

Equipped with a full-time all-wheel-drive system as a standard feature, the LS 600h L is designed to deliver power and performance on par with modern 12-cylinder engines while still delivering best-in-V8-class fuel efficiency. It is also projected to carry a Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) rating, meaning the LS 600h L will have nearly 70 percent fewer smog-forming emissions than the “cleanest” of its competitors.

The long-wheelbase configuration of the LS 600h L brings nearly five inches of additional legroom for rear passengers (compared to the standard LS model). A long list of standard and available luxury conveniences makes the LS 600h L an ultra-luxurious vehicle.

Being placed on the spotlight is something that is never new with Lexus. For years, I have constantly seen this make in reliability surveys and beauty awards. This time, it is also invading another category—safety. For the first time, the manufacturer’s Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) will be equipped in the 2009 Lexus GS 450h.

Driving a powerful automobile as Lexus will surely inspire us to rev up, which the manufacturers expect us to do. As a precautionary measure, the VDIM is equipped in the system of the GS 450h to ensure that the vehicle will endure the impacts of collisions. This system incorporates a lot of sensors which can brake wheels individually, ease off of the throttle, and even provide subtle steering assistance. All these are intended to help the driver maintain control on slippery roads and during untoward incidences. It will sense over throttle in a split second and help prevent excessive wheelspin for maximum grip during accidents.

The 2009 Altima Hybrid is a 4-door, 5-passenger family sedan, available in one trim only, the HEV. Upon introduction, the Altima Hybrid is equipped with a standard 2.5-liter, I4, 158-horsepower, hybrid engine that achieves 35-mpg in the city and 33-mpg on the highway. A variable speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The 2009 Altima Hybrid is a carryover from 2008.
